Understanding Traffic Flow

This calculator is based on the fundamental relationship in traffic engineering:

Flow = Speed × Density

• Traffic Flow (q): The number of vehicles passing a specific point per unit of time.
• Traffic Density (k): The number of vehicles occupying a given length of roadway.
• Average Speed (v): The average speed of vehicles in a traffic stream.

You can calculate any one of these three variables by providing the other two.
