Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this brick calculator? +

Our brick calculator provides estimates based on standard construction practices and the dimensions you provide. It accounts for mortar joints and wall thickness to give you a reasonably accurate estimate. However, we recommend adding 5-10% extra bricks to account for breakage and cutting.

What’s the difference between single and double brick walls? +

A single brick wall (4.5″) is typically used for interior walls or decorative purposes, while a double brick wall (9″) provides better insulation and structural strength, commonly used for exterior walls. Triple brick walls (13.5″) are used for load-bearing walls or in areas requiring extra durability.

How do I account for windows and doors? +

For openings like windows and doors, calculate their area (height × width) and subtract it from your total wall area before using the calculator. Alternatively, you can use our advanced version which includes openings (coming soon).

What type of mortar should I use? +

The type of mortar depends on your project. Type N (general purpose) is most common for above-grade walls. Type S is used for below-grade applications. Our specialists can recommend the best mortar type for your specific project if you call for a consultation.

Can this calculator be used for other masonry units? +

Yes! While designed for standard bricks, you can adjust the brick dimensions to calculate for concrete blocks, stone, or other masonry units. Just input the correct dimensions of your building units.
