Drop force, also known as impact force, is the amount of force generated when an object collides with a surface after falling from a certain height. This force depends on several factors including the object’s mass, the height from which it falls, gravitational acceleration, and the properties of the surface it impacts.

When an object falls, it accelerates due to gravity, gaining kinetic energy. Upon impact, this energy is transferred to the surface over a very short time period. The force generated during this impact is what we calculate as drop force. Harder surfaces result in shorter impact times and consequently higher peak forces.
Drop Force Formula
The calculation of drop force involves two main steps:
1. Calculate impact velocity: v = √(2gh)
Where:
v = impact velocity (m/s)
g = acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m/s² on Earth)
h = drop height (m)
2. Calculate impact force: F = (m * v) / t
Where:
F = impact force (N)
m = mass of object (kg)
v = impact velocity (from step 1)
t = impact duration (varies by material)
How to Calculate Drop Force
Follow these steps to manually calculate drop force:
- Determine the mass of the object in kilograms (kg)
- Measure the height from which the object falls in meters (m)
- Calculate impact velocity using v = √(2gh)
- Select appropriate impact time based on surface material:
- Concrete: ~0.1 seconds
- Wood: ~0.2 seconds
- Metal: ~0.3 seconds
- Rubber: ~0.5 seconds
- Foam: ~1.0 seconds
- Calculate impact force using F = (m * v) / t
- For equivalent weight, divide force by gravity: m = F / g
